Consultant Spotlight - January 2026
How long have you been with miLEAD?
3.5 years!
What is the focus of your research?
Opioids inhibit neurons in the brainstem critical for breathing, which is how opioids cause fatal overdose. I study fentanyl-induced respiratory depression using mouse models to better understand the dangers of this drug, as well as the proteins that mediate respiratory depression.
What are your current career goals?
I plan to open my own research laboratory to continue studying substance use and overdose.
What roles have you played on projects?
So far, I’ve been a consultant and project manager; I am about to take on an advisor role for the first time!
What led you to seek out miLEAD?
I wanted exposure to the business side of science. I felt miLEAD would help me develop different critical thinking skills than what I am learning in graduate school.
Since joining miLEAD, what skills have you been able to develop?
miLEAD helped me gain the ability to develop a project strategy and lead a team to execute it, the critical thinking to efficiently answer questions, and the competence and confidence necessary to do well in business and industry settings. Of course, I have to mention the improvement in slide design skills as well!
Currently, in addition to my thesis work, I am doing some pilot testing for a start-up harm reduction company. My experience from miLEAD projects and management has given me the confidence to successfully navigate this first consulting job in academia.
What has been one of your most rewarding experiences thus far working with miLEAD?
I’ve had a lot of rewarding experiences! Since it is hard to choose, I thought I’d share my favorites:
Being a project manager was very challenging for me; however, I know it helped me grow professionally!
I always enjoyed the social aspect of working on teams and being part of a larger community. Since joining miLEAD, I’ve met so many interesting people!
Regardless of the role I’ve played, I found it satisfying and rewarding to make our clients happy with our performance on every project!
I've enjoyed being on the board of directors - with a great group of people - and contributing to the miLEAD community in a different way!
