Consultant Spotlight - February 2024

Steph Steltzer

PhD Student in Molecular & Integrative Physiology

How long have you been with miLEAD?

I joined miLEAD in Fall 2021, so just over 2 years!

What is the focus of your research?

My research revolves around tendon regeneration with a specific focus on cell behavior in different environments (e.g., low oxygen, stiffer substrates) to stimulate tendon-type extracellular matrix deposition.

What are your current career goals?

I would like to continue to improve global health by contributing to the pathway from the benchtop to the clinic. Presently, I am interested in careers in industry where I can push the frontiers of medicine and support innovative technologies through collaboration with scientists, clinicians, and entrepreneurs with the same goal. I see myself in a career such as a scientist or director in R&D, or in business development as a biotech entrepreneur.

What roles have you played on projects?

I have been a consultant on projects involving preclinical disease modeling and surgical treatments, in addition to being a project manager for a project focused on heavy machinery. I have been more recently promoted to the role of advisor and board member as the Director of Membership, and I am excited for my first role as an advisor!

What led you so seek out milead?

miLEAD offered a unique opportunity to bridge the gap from academia to industry, where I aim to be post-graduation. miLEAD focuses on professional development through networking, real-world consulting experience, and leadership training. I sought additional, industry-relevant education to supplement my PhD education as I prepare to enter the biotech industry, and miLEAD couldn't have been a better place for this.

Since joining miLEAD, what skills have you been able to develop?

The most influential skills I have added to my toolbox since joining miLEAD have been science communication, presentation, and leadership. I have been able to apply and continue to practice these skills through not only miLEAD, but my lab work as well.

What has been one of your most rewarding experiences thus far working with miLEAD?

I have learned so much from my experience working with different teams in different roles, and I never stop learning from peers within miLEAD about how to be a better consultant and leader as I continue to work with people from various backgrounds.
